My objective for creating a local food video was to learn more about local food systems, how they work, who is involved, and what value locally grown food can deliver to a community. I define “value,” within the scope of the 3 sustainability pillars - environmental, economic and social. By “local,” I am referencing the state of Minnesota, and in particular, the tri-county region which includes; Stearns, Benton, and Sherburne counties.
This project has helped me to better understand how food systems work. The video was a fun way to share what I learned and to help spread awareness of the value of growing, eating and buying local. There are many connections to how the “local” movement can strengthen businesses/communities, health, and ecology.
(a few) Things that I feel can improve within the tri-county region:
I want to see more of our food eateries serving locally grown ingredients - especially in the height of harvest season in MN! By slowly growing the local content of your menus you are directly contributing to the health of our community! The demand is growing, give it a try!
Implement and set-up hoop houses to extend your vegetable growing season - making your food accessible longer! This helps build availability for local buyers and restaurants.
St. Cloud and surrounding cities should support Farmer’s Markets and other small businesses that are distribution channels! Local products of any kind strengthen and keep our area growing and healthy. If people feel connected to goods and services, they will want to stay!
